Making Friends
We met Katie and Jake on the glacier hike - Katie lives 4 blocks from Anna in NYC and Jake won their trip to NZ in a raffle.
After the hike the four of us caravaned up to a tiny town called Hokatika for their annual "Wildfoods Festival" where the motto is "There's room for all God's creatures...between two slices of bread." Hokatika's year-round population of about 3,000 swells to over 19,000 for the festival, which brings out the most eclectic group of Kiwis we'll ever encounter. Some festival offerings included intestines, brains and other delicacies that we can't mention on this family-friendly blog. We had a falafel and some beers, and called it a day.
We hit the "Wildfoods Dance" in the evening, and did some wild dancing. This shot was taken by a Kiwi who was obsessed with John Deere tractors, and performed some of the best interpretive dancing we've ever seen.

Hi ladies,
This looks like the most amazing trip!!! Thanks for keeping all of us up on the latest...its been so fun to read up on you. Na, thanks for the postcard - you are the best. I love looking at warm places, esp. with the winter we have been having in Bah-stan!! Hugs to you both. love, Ali
Lovely picture ladies.
Yes the Wild Foods Festival was quite the event. The people watching was tremendous.
We have just gotten back to Queenstown after our three day hike on the Routeburn Track. It was fantastic. We still miss Poncho and red tighty-whities.
We're leaving tomorrow and will keep up with your travels. Hope all is well and you have a "starlet" in Aussie country.
-Kate and Jake
