Welcome to Possum Valley

After our cheese tasting and an afternoon visiting the many local waterfalls, we drove to our home for the night, Possum Valley. It defies description, but here goes: because the owner wasn't there, we were the only two people for miles and miles. It was like camping, but in a cabin that was decorated in the late 60's. At first we thought the cobwebs and bugs and dead snake skins were our only friends for the evening, but after we heard scratching at the walls and saw kangaroos hopping alongside our car we realized we had a lot of company. That night, the city girls in us were wary about going outside without making loud clapping noises first and shining the flashlights in every direction. We sang songs loudly to keep the snakes away and drank as much of the local beer as we could find to help quell our fears. There were cows crowding the 4 mile long gravel/dirt/mud drive into Possum Valley (including a river our Hyundai did not like driving through) and we saw a number of kangaroos and possums. The following morning, the light of day helped us feel braver, and we decided to go on a nature walk to the meditation hut. After about 20 minutes searching for platypus and enjoying the views, we looked down to discover our ankles were covered in leeches. Yes, leeches. It still pains us just to write about it. They managed to burrow through our long pants, socks and sneakers and attach themselves. For once, we were glad that there was no one within miles -- what ensued was yelling and screaming and a lot of hopping around trying to remove them. The walk back to the cabin quickly turned into a sprint and felt like it lasted for hours since we had to regularly stop and check each other's ankles. It's a week later and we still find ourselves checking each other's ankles. Here are some pictures of Possum Valley, we didn't catch any of the leeches or clapping on film.
